Some details must be &#8220;filled in&#8221; by whatever organization uses it. It is a 5 day VBS program for 3 hours in the morning (we usually went from 9am to noon.) You can take these ideas and customize them for your own church. Modify the <a href=\"https:\/\/hughcalc.org\/fcp\/JesusVBS.doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">linked Word Document<\/a> as much as you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_34\">Each day is broken up into a few sections. The students are grouped by age into different classes and each class goes to a different station in rotation after all starting out in the Assembly at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Concepts to be taught &#8211; the topics for the day<\/li><li>Assembly &#8211; all gather in the sanctuary for a group presentation<\/li><li>Phrase of the Day &#8211; a short sentence to remember the concepts<\/li><li>Story Time &#8211; <strong>Station #1<\/strong>: 1 or 2 people tell the story to each class<\/li><li>Music &#8211; <strong>Station #2<\/strong>: 1 or 2 people perform music &amp; teach it to each class<\/li><li>Science\/Discovery Time &#8211; <strong>Station #3<\/strong>: 1 or 2 people lead hands on demonstrations<\/li><li>Craft &#8211; <strong>Station #4<\/strong>: 1 or 2 people help children design and build their own creations<\/li><li>Games &#8211; <strong>Station #5<\/strong>: 3 or 4 people lead physical activities for each class<\/li><li>Snack &#8211; <strong>Station #6<\/strong>: 2 or 3 people prepare themed food\/beverages for each class<\/li><li>Take Home &#8211; A small item for each child to remember the day<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_101\"><strong>Mascot for the whole 5 day program: Baarbara the Sheep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_103\">Day 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_105\"><strong>Concepts to be taught<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Christmas is Jesus\u2019 birthday.<\/li><li>His birth was prophesied.<\/li><li>Common shepherds were told by angels to come and worship Him.<\/li><li>Magi followed the star to worship Him.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_115\"><strong>Assembly:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_117\">Starting at about 8:45, show either \u201cThe Toy That Saved Christmas\u201d (Veggie Tale):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_119\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wr1nhSSfjx0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Part 1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FXxE9vFiPL4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Part 3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ars2LViegxE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Part 4<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fWiyHCoWVM0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Part 5<\/a>) or \u201cA Charlie Brown Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_121\">Do a skit about Jesus\u2019 birthday party with Baarbara the sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_123\">Choose a few songs\/videos from a previous packaged VBS and use them all week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_125\"><strong>Phrase of the day<\/strong>: God loves us and sent His Son Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_127\"><strong>Response<\/strong>: Amen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_129\"><strong>Story time<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_131\">&#8211; Use a nativity set to tell the story in \u201cGood Shepherd\u201d style. Instead, let the oldest group act it out with scripts, since they probably all know the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_133\">&#8211; Hide pictures from the nativity story in the room, let kids find them, and then reconstruct the story as a review. (except for the oldest group)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_135\">&#8211; Using pictures of Christmas objects, sort them between secular and religious aspects of Christmas. Stick secular object pictures on a paper xmas tree and stick religious ones on a paper barn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_137\"><strong>Music<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Each day, learn\/practice the VBS theme song(s).<\/li><li>Listen to baby Jesus religious Christmas songs while unwrapping a gift-within-a-gift to reveal a bag of cross necklaces as a gift for all. (Each child removes 1 layer of wrapping paper from a box that has been wrapped repeatedly.)<\/li><li>Leaders sing verses from \u201cAmen, Amen\u201d (FWS page 2072) or you can listen to Sydney Poitier sing it <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rn6w255CGkk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/rn6w255CGkk<\/a> while kids sing the Amen part.<\/li><li>Play \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E9RzG7pTRis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Little Drummer Boy<\/a>\u201d and have kids use percussion instruments to play ONLY during al the rum-pa-pum-pum parts.<\/li><li>If time permits, learn verses 1 &amp; 2 of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EDRWBumrDw0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Away in a Manger<\/a>.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_149\"><strong>Science\/Discovery Time<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Explain the prophecies of Jesus\u2019 birth from Isaiah 7:14, then do experiments in which the kids predict the outcomes. Some experiments should behave predictably and some should have surprising outcomes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_153\">Possible experiments include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_155\">Diet Coke &amp; Mentos (bubbles over) verses Pepsi &amp; Necco\u2019s (light hydrogen gas produced to have a flame) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metacafe.com%2Fwatch%2F6813531%2Fsdcc_matt_zaller_interviews_stan_lee%2F&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNGj73n6cThCNlD01zdjgwtQXFNNVQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.metacafe.com\/watch\/6813531\/sdcc_matt_zaller_interviews_stan_lee\/<\/a> It should be noted that Necco\u2019s are hard to find, but can be purchased online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.neccostore.com%2Fassorted-wafers.pd&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNH8xG9YopyhtN0oGlKXq81WEcbLYQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.neccostore.com\/assorted-wafers.pd<\/a> but are not cheap. We should all be looking for them at stores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_157\">What sinks and what floats? Demo with sodas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stevespanglerscience.com%2Fexperiment%2F00000051&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNHoj3I2B3LsNG_IcvrW0wZ0w5cgAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.stevespanglerscience.com\/experiment\/00000051<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_159\">then have some other objects to predict what sinks and what floats. (for example, pumice will float but other rocks sink) Use aluminum foil to demonstrate that a ball of it sinks but a boat of it floats and explain why. Let them make objects that will float from aluminum foil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_161\"><strong>Craft<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>anything made as a star or angel<\/li><li>baby Jesus Christmas tree ornament, angel ornament, star ornament<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_167\"><strong>Games<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tell story about Herod, then play \u201cRun From Herod\u201d (tag, but \u201cIt\u201d is \u201cHerod\u201d).<\/li><li>Magi deliver gifts in relay while trying to run past Herod (teen helpers, possibly with foam swords). If tagged, then have to take the gift back and try again.<\/li><li>\u201cSwaddling cloths\u201d relay. Kids run down, swaddle baby Jesus in a towel and run back. Next kid unswaddles\u2026<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_175\"><strong>Snack<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>square cookies criss-crossed to look like gifts or Jesus\u2019 birthday cupcakes<\/li><li>Daily free play supplies of crayons &amp; paper, Legos\/Duplos<\/li><li>Older kids could learn to fold and cut stars <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ushistory.org%2Fbetsy%2Fflagstar.html&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNHjikl-6PtF6u0oV3O4jAMnw0p2Cg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/betsy\/flagstar.html<\/a><\/li><li>Younger kids can color a nativity scene, or perhaps play with one<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_185\"><strong>Take home<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_187\">The cross necklace obtained during music class<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_189\">Day 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_191\"><strong>Concepts to be taught<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_193\">&#8211; (Grown up) Jesus preached to everyone about God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_195\">&#8211; Parable about leaving the 99 sheep to find the 1. (Everyone wanted to be with Him.) Then older kids move steel washers through a cardboard maze using a magnet below the cardboard. Younger kids \u201cfish\u201d with a magnet on a string or stick, picking up fish with a steel paper clips on them.<\/li><li>Discuss baptism and how it changes a person to start a new life, then drop into water one of those bathtub animals that expand in water and note the change.<\/li><li>Could also look at a penny dry and through a glass of water and note the magnification.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_241\"><strong>Craft<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use a baby food jar to make a snowless snow globe. Glue a person onto the lid, then fill it half full of water. When you turn it upside down, the person is baptized!<\/li><li>Make tee shirts which are stenciled with \u201cGood Samaritan.\u201d Let older kids do Sharpie tie dying on the shirt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fchemistry.about.com%2Fod%2Fchemistryhowtoguide%2Fa%2Fsharpietiedye.htm&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNHa_Lky0xoGsfhfi72dRGqsaPg3WA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/chemistry.about.com\/od\/chemistryhowtoguide\/a\/sharpietiedye.htm<\/a>.<\/li><li>Use heavy paper to make a megaphone for sharing the news.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_249\"><strong>Games<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cTell the good news\u201d game in which there are pairs of numbered papers randomly given to the kids. Kids must quickly find the person who has their mate, then the two must come to you and say \u201cJesus is the Good Shepherd.\u201d<\/li><li>Start with a 3-legged race, then 4, then whole team to simulate sheep who move in herds.<\/li><li>\u201cGather the Herd\u201d is dodgeball, but when a kid is hit, they must move to the team that hit them. Eventually the herd is all together.<\/li><li>Younger kids could simply play \u201cFollow the Leader,\u201d who would be a teen dressed like a shepherd. The kids would be the sheep.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_259\"><strong>Snack<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Oreos\/vanilla cookies to be dunked in milk or juice like baptism<\/li><li>Free play (coloring, Legos\/Duplos)<\/li><li>Leave a few plastic sheep in the room to hide and let the kids find<\/li><li>Pictures of the parables to color<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_269\"><strong>Take home<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_271\">Candy cane representing a shepherd\u2019s staff<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_273\">Day 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_275\"><strong>Concepts to be taught<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jesus is going to heaven to prepare a place for us.<\/li><li>Last supper and meaning of communion.<\/li><li>Pharisees didn\u2019t like Jesus saying He was God\u2019s Son and King of the Jews, so they had Him arrested.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_283\"><strong>Assembly:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_285\">I can\u2019t seem to find a good video for this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_287\">Baarbara skit about some sort of confusion about where\/what heaven is, then straight man explains to Baarbara what it is and that Jesus went to heaven to prepare a place for us. He wanted us to have communion to remember Him after He left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_289\"><strong>Phrase of the day<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_291\">Jesus said, \u201cRemember me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_293\"><strong>Response<\/strong>: Amen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_295\"><strong>Story time<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_297\">&#8211; Older kids \u2013 watch interview with Colton (\u201cthe boy who went to heaven\u201d) and discuss. <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/F3xItrGOi6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/F3xItrGOi6Q<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_299\">&#8211; Younger kids &#8211; talk about heaven and let kids tell what they think it will be like. Maybe bring in some pillows and let them walk on them and tell them that people imagine that heaven is in the sky (above the clouds, represented by the pillows) but that\u2019s not really true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_301\">&#8211; Tell about communion then actually have (unblessed) communion with bread cubes and juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_303\">&#8211; Tell kids about Jesus being arrested, but leave them hanging on the outcome and tell them they\u2019ll find out what happened tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_305\"><strong>Music<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_307\">&#8211; Start with lively video from years past for Friday night program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_309\">&#8211; Learn \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Oc3cNaUZ6MI&amp;feature=related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Let Us Break Bread Together<\/a>\u201d (UMH 618) then let kids dance freestyle with ribbons to this song. Teachers demo some ribbon moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_311\">&#8211; Listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5IR1sCsxbZQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cRemember Me\u201d<\/a> by downhere, then do floor stretches while listening and sing only the chorus. (not available on YouTube, but I have the CD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_313\">&#8211; Sing and do motions with \u201cJesus in My Life\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/cn_yYmxnACc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/cn_yYmxnACc<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h.p_ID_315\"><strong>Science\/Discovery Time<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Conduct memory experiments: Have kids try to remember a string of unrelated words. Then have them remember a sentence of the same length and they\u2019ll see that it\u2019s easier to remember when they make sense. Relate this to communion \u2013 how we repeat the act to remember Jesus.<\/li><li>Play \u201cconcentration\u201d which is having a bunch of pairs of cards with pictures on them, all face down. They take turns turning over 2 cards and get to keep them when they match. (Gayle does this in crafts as a time filler though.)<\/li><li>Experiment with the memory of a rubber band and show how it changes with temperature.
